Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We clean and restore Guardsman registers and grilles throughout Atlanta for a typical installed range of $85 to $165 per vent, depending on size, finish, and how much build-up has fused to the metal. Most homeowners call us after they notice the vent looks dull or feels sticky, or when a standard wipe-down does nothing because the grime has baked on over years of Georgia humidity and HVAC cycling. The good news: we carry Guardsman-compatible restoration products on our trucks and can usually handle the work the same day we come out.
Which Guardsman Models This Applies To
Guardsman produces registers and grilles in three primary lines: the Standard stamped-steel series, the Decorator series with rolled edges and powder-coated finishes, and the heavy-gauge Commercial series used in Atlanta office build-outs and retail spaces. The key compatibility gotcha is the mounting hole pattern. The Standard series uses a 4-hole corner mount, while the Decorator series uses a 6-hole perimeter mount with a slightly smaller faceplate. If you’re replacing rather than cleaning, measure the rough opening first – not the faceplate. A Decorator grille with a 10-by-6 faceplate fits a 9-by-5 opening, and it catches a lot of Atlanta homeowners off guard.
OEM Guardsman parts cost more and are worth it if you’re matching an existing finish exactly. For cleaning and restoration, the finish is mostly irrelevant since we’re working with what’s already installed. The exception is powder-coated Decorator units: abrasive cleaners will strip the coating, which is why we use Guardsman’s own restoration compounds rather than generic degreasers. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Guardsman directly, but we stock their cleaning line because it’s the safest match for their finishes.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- Sticky or tacky faceplate. This is typically aerosolized cooking oil bonding with dust. In Atlanta’s humidity, that film polymerizes and becomes nearly impossible to remove with household cleaners.
- Visible gray-brown film around the louvers. This is fine particulate that has electrostatically adhered to the metal. It signals that the underlying filter has been underperforming and the vent is catching what should have been trapped upstream.
- Musty odor near the vent. Moisture from Atlanta’s summer air condenses on dirty metal, and the accumulated debris starts to harbor microbial growth. The smell is most noticeable when the system first kicks on.
- Discoloration or white spotting on the finish. On Guardsman Decorator series, this is usually chemical etching from harsh spray cleaners or overly aggressive scrubbing. It can’t be wiped away; it requires refinishing or replacement.
- Loose or rattling louvers. Over years of expansion and contraction from Atlanta’s temperature swings, the stamped louvers on Standard series units can lose tension. It’s usually more cost-effective to replace the grille than to attempt a re-tensioning repair.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Atlanta Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single standard register deep clean & restoration | $85 – $115 per vent |
| Decorator or powder-coated register cleaning | $105 – $145 per vent |
| Full-home register & grille cleaning (10-14 vents) | $695 – $995 |
| Replacement grille (Standard series, installed) | $75 – $120 per vent plus the part |
| Replacement grille (Decorator series, installed) | $110 – $165 per vent plus the part |
What drives the price range is straightforward: the size of the unit, how much build-up is on it, and whether the finish needs restoration or just a deep clean. Every quote comes in writing before any work starts, and that number does not change at the door. We itemize labor and materials separately so you know exactly what you’re paying for. If a register is beyond cleaning and needs replacement, we’ll show you the part cost and install it for the labor fee listed above. Every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the work isn’t right within a full year, we return and correct it at no charge.

Removing a register or grille to check the duct behind it is safe and useful. Turn the system off, lift the unit out, and look inside. What you do not want to do is use oven cleaner, bleach-based sprays, or wire brushes on Guardsman finishes – especially the Decorator line. The powder coat will etch or peel, and you’ll turn a $100 cleaning into a $200 replacement. The same rule applies to soaking the grille in the bathtub: trapped water in the louvers will rust from the inside out, and in a humid Atlanta home, that rust accelerates fast. Tell me what you need, I’ll tell you what it costs – we’ll both sleep better tonight. Call (470) 408-4927 for a straight answer and a written quote.
FAQs
In metro Atlanta’s humidity, a Standard series Guardsman grille typically lasts 12 to 18 years before the finish degrades or the louvers lose tension. Decorator series units last a bit longer, usually 15 to 20 years, because the powder coating protects the base metal. Homes with whole-home humidifiers or frequent deep-frying will see that lifespan shorten to the lower end. If your grilles are within that window and look rough, cleaning usually restores them – replacement isn’t automatic. Call (470) 408-4927 and we’ll assess yours honestly.
Most can be restored. As long as the finish hasn’t been chemically etched and the louvers still hold their position, a professional-grade cleaning brings them back to near-new appearance. We use Guardsman-formulated restoration compounds paired with our Nikro HEPA extraction system so loosened debris goes into the vacuum, not back into your ductwork. If the metal itself is pitted or the mounting tabs have snapped, replacement is the better call, and we’ll tell you that plainly before quoting anything.
For a whole-home job with 10 to 14 vents, expect 1.5 to 3 hours on site depending on how much build-up each unit has. A single vent usually takes 20 to 30 minutes including removal, cleaning, duct inspection with a borescope, and reinstallation. You get a live arrival window through The Relay Standard, so you know exactly when we’ll be there. Reach us at (470) 408-4927 to schedule a time that works.
We stock the most common Guardsman Standard and Decorator sizes on our trucks: 4×10, 6×10, 6×12, and 12×12. If your opening is a non-standard size, we can typically source the correct unit through our Atlanta suppliers within two to three business days. We also work with compatible parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems when a full system match is easier that way. Call (470) 408-4927 with your rough opening measurement and we’ll confirm availability on the spot.
