Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
Aprilaire register and grille cleaning in Atlanta typically runs $90 – $220 for a full-home service, depending on the number of registers and how much buildup has accumulated. We stock Aprilaire-compatible replacement registers and grilles on the truck, so if yours are beyond cleaning, we can swap them the same day. Most Atlanta homeowners discover the problem the way you probably did: you popped a register off to check airflow, saw a layer of gray fuzz and dust caked on the blades, and realized simply wiping the surface isn’t going to cut it.
Registers and grilles are the visible end of your duct system. Aprilaire builds theirs from stamped aluminum or steel with specific blade spacing designed to work with whole-home ventilation and filtration setups. When they clog, airflow drops, your Aprilaire system works harder, and the dust you’re trying to filter out ends up riding the air right back into the room. Omar Haddad and our crew at Cardinal Air Duct Atlanta have pulled registers off in homes from Buckhead to Decatur that looked like they were wearing a felt coat. The good news: it’s fixable, and it’s one of the more affordable services we offer.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire registers and grilles are not one-size-fits-all, and that’s where a lot of owners get tripped up. The company makes several distinct lines, and the part stamped “Aprilaire” on the face doesn’t always mean it fits your specific setup. Here’s what we see most in Atlanta homes:
- Aprilaire Model 5000 and 6000 series side-wall registers: These are the most common in Atlanta houses built or retrofitted in the last 15 years. They measure 4″ × 10″, 4″ × 12″, or 6″ × 12″ at the face, and the blade spacing is tighter than generic big-box replacements. A standard off-the-shelf register from a hardware store won’t seat correctly and will whistle.
- Aprilaire 800 and 900 series ceiling grilles: These are designed for high-velocity systems and have a reinforced center bar. The screw holes are set wider than standard, so if you try to retrofit a generic grille, you’ll be drilling new holes into drywall or floor joists.
- Aprilaire return-air grilles with integrated filter tracks: These are part of the whole-home filtration system. The grille itself holds a media filter, so the depth matters. A grille that’s too shallow will crush the filter and let air bypass it entirely.
The quickest way to identify what you have: pop the register off and look for a stamped model number on the back frame. Aprilaire usually stamps the series number on the inside lip. If the stamp is worn off, measure the face dimensions and note whether the mounting holes are on the face or the side. When you call us, that’s the first thing our technicians will ask. For older Aprilaire systems that are no longer in production, we can often match an OEM-compatible equivalent. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Aprilaire, so we’re free to tell you honestly whether an aftermarket equivalent will perform as well or whether you should stick with the OEM part.

Signs Your Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- Visible dust accumulation on the blades and frame. This is the one everyone notices first. The blades collect a gray, waxy film that regular household dusting won’t remove because it’s made of fine particulates mixed with humidity and the static charge from airflow.
- Whistling or rattling when the system runs. Clogged blades force air through smaller openings, which creates turbulence. If you hear a whistle that changes pitch when you adjust the register damper, the register itself is restricting flow.
- Uneven airflow between rooms. A room that used to heat or cool evenly now lags. This happens when the register in that room is partially blocked while others are clear, so the system sends more air to the path of least resistance.
- The register won’t stay in the position you set. The damper mechanism inside Aprilaire registers uses a small friction fit. Years of dust and grime build up in the pivot points, and once the friction is gone, the damper droops or slams shut on its own.
- Visible rust or corrosion on the metal. Atlanta’s humidity is rough on stamped steel. Registers in bathrooms, kitchens, or any room with exterior walls can develop surface rust, which means the protective coating has failed and the metal is degrading.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, cleaning and reconditioning Aprilaire registers and grilles runs $8 – $15 per register, with a full-home service call typically landing between $90 and $220 depending on how many the home has and how much buildup needs to be removed. If a register is beyond cleaning and needs replacement, quality Aprilaire-compatible units run $18 – $40 each, with installation included in that price.
What drives the range: how many registers are in the home, whether we’re cleaning all of them or only the problem ones, and whether any need full replacement due to rust, broken dampers, or stripped mounting hardware. We hand you a written price before any work starts, and that number is what you pay. No surprise fees when the technician is already in your hallway. Every cleaning and replacement is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right within 365 days, we return and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely pop a register off and inspect it. In fact, we encourage it. Pull it out, look at the back side, and check the damper. If it’s covered in dust and you want to give it a shot, a warm water and mild dish soap soak followed by a soft brush will handle surface grime. The risk with DIY is what you miss: a register that looks clean on the face can still have a jammed damper, a stripped mounting hole, or a broken blade that’s disrupting airflow in a room you don’t use daily. And if rust has set in, cleaning won’t fix it. If you’re not sure whether yours are cleanable or shot, call us at (470) 408-4927 and describe what you see. Tell us what you need, we’ll tell you what it costs, we’ll both sleep better tonight.
FAQs
A well-built Aprilaire register should last 15 – 25 years before the damper mechanism or mounting tabs fail, but Atlanta’s humidity and pollen load mean the finish can start degrading in 8 – 10 years without regular cleaning. The damper is usually the first thing to go, not the metal itself.
Sometimes. A jammed damper can often be freed with a proper cleaning and lubrication (we use a dry silicone, not WD-40, which attracts dust), and stripped mounting holes can be re-anchored. But bent blades, cracked frames, and rust that has eaten through the coating are replacement jobs. We’ll tell you honestly which category yours falls into. Call (470) 408-4927 for a straight answer.
A full-home register and grille cleaning for a typical Atlanta house takes 45 – 90 minutes, depending on the number of registers and how much buildup each one has. If replacements are needed, add about 10 minutes per unit. We bring the replacements on the truck, so it’s one visit.
Yes. We carry the most common Aprilaire-compatible sizes and styles on our vehicles, including side-wall and ceiling-based units. If you have an unusual size or a discontinued model, we can locate an OEM-compatible match and return to install it within a week. We also work with Lennox, Trane, and Carrier-compatible registers for mixed-brand systems in older Atlanta homes.
